Baltimore, she learned, was a city of mixed loyalties, with some citizens supporting the South and others supporting the North. The march of the Union regiment across the city to catch the train to Washington had attracted Confederate sympathizers, who taunted the troops and began flinging stones.
The soldiers fought back, shots were fired, and a riot ensued, ending in the deaths of four soldiers and twelve civilians. In response to the event, Barton wrote, âThe darkest page in our countryâs history is now being written in lines of blood!â3
She learned that many of the soldiers had lost their baggage in Baltimore. They had the clothes on their backs, but nothing more. Right away, she went through the closets and pantries of her own house, gathering food and sewing supplies. Next she went to the merchants in town, persuading them to open on a Sunday so she could fill large wicker baskets with soap, food, and other items for the soldiers.
That spring and summer, Barton watched as thousands of troops poured into the city, setting up camp wherever there was space. Facilities such as the Treasury Department, the Navy Yard, and warehouses became makeshift campsites. One regiment set out bedrolls in the Patent Office where Barton worked. She went from place to place, nursing the sick and injured and delivering supplies. She placed an advertisement in the Worcester Spy, her hometown newspaper, inviting people to send bandages, salves, canned fruit, pickled vegetables, clothing, and other items for the soldiers. Within a few months, she filled her house and three warehouses with donations.
